First shown in 2012 this hour long BBC documentary is an absolute peach. It’s the nostalgic tale of the British roadsters’ golden years, wonderfully told by a eclectic cast of owners, enthusiasts and experts, spliced with fabulous period footage from all our favourite marques. Films about classic cars do not come better than this.
It kicks of with vintage shots of busy production lines feeding the the booming post-war demand for nimble two-seaters, stoked-up by rave reviews from returning American GIs who’d been lucky enough to have a play with little British sports cars while stationed here during WWII. Indeed, without that massive American market in the 1950s we would never have had such a rich legacy of fab little sports car and Cafe Roadster would not a thing. This was a hugely crowded, but very lucrative, market with MG, Austin-Healey, Jaguar and Triumph among a dozen other smaller British companies fighting for the same thrill-seeking customers – thank heavens for those crazy cash-happy Yanks! Make yourself a nice big brew, turn up the speakers and enjoy.
